Windows: PowerToys

I have to admit that I discovered PowerToys about a year ago. Since then I use this add-on on all my computers, it landed in my group of must have programs. PowerToys is a set of handy tools that let you adapt the system to your needs and make it work better.

The PowerToys package includes 18 tools, but a few of them make me more productive:

• Always on Top: lets you pin windows. With it I can put any window above the others and keep it at hand at all times.

• PowerToys Awake: a program that blocks the computer from shutting down, without changing the system settings. You can pick a mode in which the computer will not go to sleep or hibernate until I turn it off by hand or the battery runs out.

• Color Picker: a colour picker for any window in the system. Once it is on, I can grab the colour of any element on the screen in HEX, RGB or HSL.

• FancyZones: a window manager. It lets you build complex window layouts and move between them easily. There are ready made templates to use, or I can create my own.

• File Locksmith: an add-on that lets you check which processes are using selected files and folders.

• File Explorer add-ons: an add-on that lets you preview image, text, audio and video files from the folder window without launching separate programs.

• Hosts File Editor utility: a tool for managing the hosts file. The hosts file is a text file that holds information about IP addresses and domain names.

• Image Resizer: quick resizing of single or multiple images.

• Keyboard Manager: a tool that lets you map keys to other keys or shortcuts.

• Paste as Plain Text: quick pasting of the text content of the clipboard without formatting.

• PowerToys Run: lets you launch apps easily without opening the Start menu or File Explorer.
